Physical DescriptionLeopard-like animal carved in solid, polished ebony, with inlaid ivory eyes and teeth. This panther is in a striding position crouched low to the ground as if he is prowling. Statue stands on a rectangular base.
Historical NoteCrafted from rich, polished ebony with inlaid ivory eyes and teeth, this stylized panther was gifted to President John F. Kennedy by Cameroon’s first president, Ahmadou Ahidjo, during his official state visit to the White House in March 1962. In Central African iconography, the panther represents political authority, stealth, and enduring power—making it a fitting diplomatic tribute from a young nation navigating its post-colonial sovereignty. The gift highlighted a key moment in Cold War diplomacy, aligning with the Kennedy administration's proactive foreign policy efforts to support independent African leadership and establish strategic economic partnerships across the continent.
Additional DetailsCustodial History NoteItem was a gift from a foreign official to the President and First Lady received through the Executive office during the Kennedy Administration and transferred to the General Service Administration where it was held until donated to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum by the Estate of President John F. Kennedy in 1965.
