Physical DescriptionWooden plaque carved with patriotic symbols and insignia of the USS Maine. Lettering below eagle at to reads "Remember the Maine". The carving is mounted on a blue velvet background.
Historical NoteMaine was a United States Navy ship that sank in Havana Harbor on February 15, 1898, contributing to the outbreak of the Spanish–American War in April. American newspapers, engaging in yellow journalism to boost circulation, claimed that the Spanish were responsible for the ship's destruction.

Custodial History NoteItem was a gift from a member of the general public to the President and Mrs. Kennedy received by the Executive Office of the President in December 1962 and held by the General Service Administration until it was donated to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum by the Estate of President John F. Kennedy in 1965.
