Physical DescriptionTwo Wold War II bar pins of the 4th Infantry Division. One is red, white and blue striped; other is striped brown, white, black, green, red, and blue.
Historical NoteAs a World War II war correspondent for Collier's, Ernest Hemingway was attached to the 22nd Infantry Regiment of the U.S. Army's 4th Infantry Division. He witness the D-Day landings at Normandy and the liberation of Paris. The writer courted controversy, as well, by "playing soldier" in the words of one division member. Hemingway would subsequently use World War II as the backdrop for his novel "Across the River and Into the Trees" (1950).
