Physical DescriptionSilver medallion commemorating El Chamizal Treaty, Mexico. Obverse has profiles of Mateos and Kennedy with figure of Benito Juarez between them. "Justicia revolucionaria de pueblos amigos" is engraved around outer top edge. Reverse has reliefs of the American and Mexican flags with "Recuperacion de Territorio del Chamizal" and dates "1864 1963" engraved around rim.
Historical NoteThe Chamizal dispute continued to affect Mexico-United States relations adversely until President John F. Kennedy agreed to settle it on the basis of the 1911 arbitration award. It was hoped that settlement of the dispute would strengthen the "Alliance for Progress" and solidify the Organization of American States. The treaty of Chamizal was finally signed by President Johnson in October of 1967.

It was either government property or was donated to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum by the Estate of President John F. Kennedy in 1965.
