Physical DescriptionGold medal inscribed arounded "1256 In Honor - Hassiae 1956". On the obverse in bas relief is a medieval soldier holding a shield with the coat of arms of Hesse on it. The reverse has an inscription around the edge "Avorum Non Moritura Virtus", meaning "the courage of our ancestors will not die." The medal is marked at the center "X Ducat, Aureus Magnus," meaning it is worth 10 ducats called "the great gold" coin.

Custodial History NoteItem was a gift from a member of the general public to the President and Mrs. Kennedy received by the Executive Office of the President betwen 1961-1963 and held by the General Service Administration until it was donated to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum by the Estate of President John F. Kennedy in 1965.
