Historical NoteMiniature furniture and other household accessories are incorporated into the hina doll altars set up in Japanese households during the Hina-Matsuri, or Girls' Day, festivities on March 3 each year. These diamond shaped tables are meant to hold hishi-mochi, a special type of diamond-shaped rice cake identified with Hina Matsuri celebrations. Traditionally the tables are positioned between the minister dolls on the fourth tier of the altar.
