Physical DescriptionWhite painted vinyl life preserver from the U.S.S. Hornet with black lettering; "USS Hornet CVS 12". White rope attached to tube.
Historical NoteThe USS Hornet was launched from Newport News, Virginia on August 30, 1943 and was commissioned on November 29, 1943. The ship was very active during the remainder of WWII in the Pacific Theater, earning nine battle stars for service. The Hornet was used during the Vietnam War. It also served as the recovery carrier during the Apollo 11 and 12 missions. On June 26, 1970 the ship was decommissioned. In 1991 the USS Hornet was named an historic landmark.
Additional DetailsCustodial History NoteThis item is material associated with the White House the Kennedy Administration and the Executive Offices of the President. It was either government property or was donated to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum by the Estate of President John F. Kennedy in 1965.
