Physical DescriptionOrange life preserver from the U.S.S. Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. DD850 with white cord attached around diameter.
Historical NoteThe USS Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. was launched on July 26, 1945 and was commissioned on December 15, 1945. The ship was sponsored by Miss Jean Kennedy and commanded by Comdr. H.G. Moore. The ship served in the Korean War. The ship took part in the inauguration of John F. Kennedy, in January of 1961. Later the JPK Jr. was very involved in the Cuban Missile Crisis, taking part in the quarantine of Cuba during the conflict. The ship was decommissioned in 1973 and in 1974 was acquired by the Battleship Cove Museum in Fall River, Massachusetts, where it is on display.
Additional DetailsCustodial History NoteThis item is material associated with the White House the Kennedy Administration and the Executive Offices of the President. It was either government property or was donated to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum by the Estate of President John F. Kennedy in 1965.
