Physical DescriptionShip model of a Norwegian sloop called the "Restaurationen". The ship is rigged with cotton masts and has a wood hull painted green and black. This sloop has a single mast with mainsail and jib. The "Restaurationen" was the first Norwegian immigrant ship sent to America.
Historical NoteThis ship model was displayed in President Kennedy's Oval Office, in the White House. It was presented to President Kennedy by the Prime Minister of Norway, Einar Gerhardsen during his State Visit to the White House on May 9, 1962.
The Restaurationen sailed from Stavanger, Norway on July 4, 1825 and arrived in New York on October 9. The ship carried 53 souls, most of them Quakers, captained by Lars Larson Geilane. The passengers and crew were arrested upon entry because more than the allowed number came. President John Q. Adams pardoned them.
