Physical DescriptionShip model of the sloop of war, USS Wasp, which was a small sailing warship with a single gun deck that carried eighteen guns. The sloop is three-masted, or "ship rigged." The plaque on the base is inscribed: "USS WASP/ Washington Navy Yard, 1806/ Second Ship to Bear the Name. Engaged and Captured/ The British Sloop-of-War FROLIC, 13 October 1812/ Subsequently Captured and Served the British/ Navy as HBMS.Loop Cervier."
Historical NoteThe second Wasp was a sloop of war built at the Washington Navy Yard in 1806 and commissioned the following year. In June 1812, she joined the war against Great Britain while serving along the coast of the Mid-Atlantic states.
Additional DetailsCustodial History NoteItem is from the personal collection of President Kennedy. It was donated to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis in 1979.
