Physical DescriptionThis mask is of two faces carved in relief from a single block of wood. The bottom face is elongated with slanted eyes, slender nose, and small protruding lips. The top face is similar in features, but has a rounded head with an oval mark at center of the forehead.
Historical NoteThis mask was presented at the White House by Jean-Marie Kone, Minister of the State Republic of Mali, as a gift for President John F. Kennedy on July 12, 1961. Presented to Dave Powers at the White House by Jean-Marie Kone, Minister of the State Republic of Mali as a gift for President Kennedy on July 12, 1961.
Additional DetailsCustodial History NoteItem was a gift from a foreign official to the President and First Lady received through the Executive office during the Kennedy Administration and transferred to the General Service Administration where it was held until donated to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum by the Estate of President John F. Kennedy in 1965.
