Physical DescriptionThis mask of a face with an alligator protruding from the top of its headpiece is carved from a single block of wood. The face is elongated with slanted eyes, slender nose, and small protruding lips with a ruffled collar at chin. The Alligator, (approx. 5 in. long) with a notched tail and open mouth, extends upward from forehead.
Historical NoteThis mask was presented at the White House by Jean-Marie Kone, Minister of the State Republic of Mali, as a gift for President John F. Kennedy on July 12, 1961.
Additional Details
Custodial History NoteItem was a gift from a foreign official to the President and First Lady received through the Executive office during the Kennedy Administration and transferred to the General Service Administration where it was held until donated to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum by the Estate of President John F. Kennedy in 1965.
