Physical DescriptionShield shaped wooden plaque with bronze shield shaped plate with relief of the USS Thomas A. Edison submarine and nuclear warhead Polaris missile. Plaque is engraved with submarine's motto "Potentia Tenebras Repellendi" (Power to Repel the Darkness)
Historical NoteThe USS Thomas A. Edison was the 11th a nuclear submarine launched on June 15, 1961 by General Dynamics Electric Boat Division, and the 4th such vessel to launch Polaris missiles. This plaque was presented to President Kennedy by the crew during his visit to the USS Thomas A. Edison on June 14, 1962.
