Physical DescriptionBrown leather flight jacket with embroidered patch insignia of first Marine helicopter unit (HMX-1) on right shoulder. G-1 Type Navy jacket crafted of seal brown leather. Jacket has two snap-flap patch pockets, and a brown mouton fur collar. Elasticated knitted cuffs and waistband and front zip closure, with a wind flap. Patch on left side in gold lettering reads: John F. Kennedy President of the United States. There are no labels on this jacket. ,
Historical NoteJohn F. Kennedy frequently wore U.S. Navy G-1 flight jackets. This jacket features the distinctive patch HMX-1, the Marine Helicopter Squadron.
Marine One is the call sign used when the President is on board one of the HMX-1 Marine helicopters which provides all helicopter transportation for the President both overseas and within the continental United States.

On December 5, 1962, a set of three Flight jackets was purchased for the President via an official U.S. Navy invoice. The procurement was handled by Lieutenant Henry E. Hirschy, Jr., the White House Supply and Logistics Officer.

Custodial History NoteThis jacket was donated to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in 1965 by the Estate of President John F. Kennedy. It was owned by President Kennedy as part of his personal wardrobe collection.
