Historical NoteIn 1962, Houston Mayor Lewis Cutrer presented this Stetson hat to President John F. Kennedy during his historic visit to Texas. On September 11, 1962, Mayor Cutrer greeted the President on the runway of Houston International Airport—now William P. Hobby Airport—noting that the occasion marked the first time a President and Vice President had visited the city simultaneously.
Addressing an estimated 25,000 people, President Kennedy expressed his "warm appreciation for this welcome," remarking that "it is most appropriate that the Manned Spacecraft Center should be located here in Houston, identified as the most progressive city in this area." The following day, the President delivered his landmark Space Effort speech at Rice University, outlining the nation's ambitious goal to land a man on the moon.
