Hubert Coutoucou Maga was a pivotal political figure who served as the first President of Dahomey, the West African nation known today as Benin. Born in 1916 in the northern region of the country, Maga initially trained and worked as a schoolteacher before transitioning into politics during the late colonial era. He successfully built a powerful political base among the northern population, which propelled him to prominence. In August 1960, he officially proclaimed Dahomey's independence from France and took office as the new republic's head of state.Maga's first presidency, spanning from 1960 to 1963, was quickly undermined by severe economic stagnation, rising national debt, and intense trade union protests. These compounding crises culminated in a 1963 military coup led by General Christophe Soglo, which forced Maga to resign. After spending several years in exile, he returned to the political forefront in 1970 to participate in a unique, rotating three-man Presidential Council designed to ease deep ethnic and regional divisions alongside rivals Sourou Migan Apithy and Justin Ahomadegbé. This fragile power-sharing experiment was short-lived. In October 1972, a military coup led by Major Mathieu Kérékou permanently dismantled the council and placed Maga under house arrest. He was eventually released in 1981 following an amnesty. In his later years, Maga served as a respected elder statesman, advising on national unity before passing away in Cotonou in May 2000.

The country of Dahomey was renamed Benin in 1975.
