Robert Sayer1725 - 1794

The partnership of Sayer and Bennett was formed in 1774 by Robert Sayer (ca.1725-1794) and John Bennett (d.1787). Sayer was originally a printseller and publisher. Sayer and Bennett became the leading publishers of atlases and maps of the Americas in the first years of the Revolutionary war. At the time of his death in 1794, Sayer was the largest and most successful map-publisher in Europe; the firm passed to his former apprentices Robert Laurie and James Whittle, continuing as “Laurie & Whittle”
