John Gill was a leading voice of the American Revolution. Before the war, he co-published the radical Boston Gazette, a newspaper that rallied public opposition to British rule and helped spark the Boston Tea Party. By 1777, Gill operated his own shop on Queen Street as an official printer for the Massachusetts government, publishing state legislation and influential political sermons. He also established The Continental Journal, a weekly newspaper that kept Boston citizens informed of the Revolutionary War's progress.
