Andrew Law

Andrew Law (1749–1821) was a Connecticut educator, minister, and musical compiler who shaped early American hymnody. During the American Revolution, he achieved widespread recognition by setting Nathaniel Niles’s 1775 poem, "The American Hero," to music. Retitled "Bunker Hill," Law’s composition became a standard war hymn sung by New England militias. By printing Niles's verses alongside his musical notation, Law popularized the piece as one of the most celebrated musical works of the war.
