Physical DescriptionCalligraphed and illuminated chart, in black ink and colored inks depicting a partial Kennedy family tree at center, starting with Patrick Kennedy of Wexford through John Jr. and Caroline Kennedy. To the right is the Kennedy Coat of Arms, and down the left side are the names of Kennedy ancestors starting with Lorcan King of Munster. At the top of the chart is an excerpt of a poem by Giolla which dates back to 1420: "O'Cinneidigh, who reddens the javelin/ Over the wide smooth Gleann-Omra/ The race of our Donnchuan, who through valour/ Obtained the lands without dispute."
Historical NoteThis chart was presented to President Kennedy by Thomas J. Kiernan, the Ambassador of Ireland at the White House on March 17, 1961.
Additional DetailsCustodial History NoteItem was a gift from a foreign official to the President and First Lady received through the Executive office during the Kennedy Administration and transferred to the General Service Administration where it was held until donated to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum by the Estate of President John F. Kennedy in 1965.
