Physical DescriptionSilver menorah with eight candle holders on the base and one one on top of the back-plate. The back-plate is inlaid stones of coral, turquoise and garnet. Presented in olive wood box with a silver plaque inscribed "Jerusalem, Feast of Lights 5721."
Historical NoteThe hanukiah is a specific type of menorah used for Chanukah, the festival of lights, that falls in December. A hanukiah is made up of nine branches. Eight of the branches symbolise the lasting of oil for eight nights while the ninth branch is the shamash (the master light). To be considered a hanukiah the eight branches must be of uniform height and spacing.
Additional DetailsCustodial History NoteThis item is material associated with the White House the Kennedy Administration and the Executive Offices of the President. It was either government property or was donated to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum by the Estate of President John F. Kennedy in 1965.
