Historical NoteSeeking to protect her children from the glare of the media, First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy created a school inside the White House to provide Caroline and John Jr. with a group learning environment free from the gaze of outsiders. Classmates were the children of friends. The school was funded by the parents, who paid for supplies, equipment and the teachers' salaries.
In addition to the basics, the school's curriculum included French, music, ballet and painting. Examples of artwork done by the students survive in both the museum and archival collections. Caroline Kennedy created this portrait of her White House teacher Alice Grimes, who later donated it to the Library.
