Historical NoteThis peace pipe was presented at a ceremony in the East Garden at the White House on June 16, 1962. Later President Kennedy sent a letter to Native American dancer Arthur Kingsbury of St. Paul, Minnesota, thanking Kingsbury and "the young men who make up the group known as the Calumet Dancers, for the 'Peace Pipe." The president noted that Sen. Hubert Humphrey had provided "a brief history of this gift which I found most interesting." The Calumet Dance was a ceremony performed throughout the Eastern Plains region.
Additional DetailsCustodial History NoteItem presented to the President and Mrs. Kennedy at the White House received by the Executive Office of the President betwen 1961-1963 and held by the General Service Administration until it was donated to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum by the Estate of President John F. Kennedy in 1965.
