Physical DescriptionBlack and white ink and gouache painting on sepia colored ground of John F. Kennedy in a canoe with indigenous islanders in the Solomon Islands. Framed, in linen covered mat with metal plaque.
Historical NoteThis painting was created to illustrate an article that appeared in Cavalier Magazine in 1961. The original was presented to President Kennedy on May 1, 1961 by Lieutenant Arthur Reginald Evans, Australian Coastwatcher (commander of New Zealand camp during PT-109 incident), during Evans' visit to the White House. Kennedy hung it in his lounge at the White House.

Custodial History NoteArtifact was received through the White House Gift Unit in 1964, custody was transferred to the government through the Deed of Gift of the Estate of President John F. Kennedy on 2/15/1965.
