Physical DescriptionA painting in the American Primitive style of the Florida Everglades. The scene is of a Norse ship sailing into a Seminole Indian settlement of thatched huts and houses with trees covered in Spanish moss and abundant wild life, including several species of birds. At lower right corner, two people are fishing in a canoe against the rising sun in an orange sky with migrating flocks of birds in background.
Historical NoteIt is believed that Jacqueline Kennedy visited this reclusive artist's antique shop in 1960 and acquired this piece which was later received at the White House
Additional DetailsCustodial History NoteItem was a gift from a member of the general public to the President and Mrs. Kennedy received by the Executive Office of the President betwen 1961-1963 and held by the General Service Administration until it was donated to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum by the Estate of President John F. Kennedy in 1965.
