Historical NoteThis proclamation by which President John F. Kennedy named Winston Churchill an honorary citizen of the United States was issued on April 9, 1963. This historic act made Sir Winston Churchill the first person ever to be made an honorary citizen of the United States. President Kennedy honored Churchill for his leadership during World War II, his steadfast commitment to freedom and democracy, and his enduring friendship with the United States.
