Physical DescriptionPeace pipe with a carved wooden stem painted and wrapped with deerskin decorated with beadwork. The bowl is carved purple soapstone.
Historical NoteThis peace pipe was presented by Edison Real Bird, Vice Chairman of the Crow Tribal Council and by Walter Wetzel President of the National Congress of American Indians, Washington D.C. on the lawn of the White House, March 5, 1963. President Kennedy made remarks on this occasion in which he discussed his plans to improve educational and employment opportunities for Native Americans and indigenous peoples.

Custodial History NoteItem was a gift from the National Congress of American Indians to the President and Mrs. Kennedy presented on the lawn of the White House on March 5, 1963. It was held by the Executive Office of the President until it was donated to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum by the Estate of President John F. Kennedy in 1965.
