Physical DescriptionNative American peace pipe. Wood stem is long and tooled and wrapped with beaded leather. A feather is wrapped around stem. Bowl is made of purple soapstone.
Historical NoteThis peace pipe was presented to President Kennedy on March 5, 1963 by the National Congress of American Indians at the White House. The president made remarks to respresentatives of the National Congress of American Indians in which he discussed his plans to improve educational and employment opportunities for Native Americans and indigenous peoples.
Additional DetailsCustodial History NoteItem was a gift from the National Congress of American Indians to the President and Mrs. Kennedy presented on the lawn of the White House on March 5, 1963. It was held by the Executive Office of the President until it was donated to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum by the Estate of President John F. Kennedy in 1965.
