Historical NoteIn the 1956 Democratic National Convention, John F. Kennedy was a contender for the vice presidential nomination, ultimately losing to Estes Kefauver. While not an active candidate, Kennedy's name was placed in nomination, and he garnered significant support, particularly from the Massachusetts, Missouri, Ohio, Michigan, and New Jersey delegations. The vice presidential nomination required multiple ballots, and Kennedy's performance on the ballot helped elevate his national profile, positioning him for a future presidential bid. Losing the vice presidential nomination to Kefauver, Kennedy avoided being associated with a likely defeat to Eisenhower in the general election, which ultimately paved the way for his presidential run in 1960.
