Physical DescriptionPapal medal of Pope Paul VI encased in a rectangular piece of plastic mounted on a wooden base. The Medal depicts the profile of Pope Paul on the obverse with a papal seal and date MCMLXIII on the reverse. The base originally had a metal plate engraved: "presented to John F. Kennedy by His Holiness Pope Paul VI, July 1963".
Historical NoteThis medal was presented to President John F. Kennedy during his state visit to the Vatican on July 2, 1963 by Pope Paul VI.
Additional DetailsCustodial History NoteItem was a gift from a foreign official to the President and First Lady received through the Executive office during the Kennedy Administration and transferred to the General Service Administration where it was held until donated to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum by the Estate of President John F. Kennedy in 1965.
