Physical DescriptionLamp made from a section of ivory tusk carved in deep relief. The lamp is decorated with carved figures of an elephant, tiger, and various animals in two registers. The top register is under a canopy of carved leaves, and there is a floral and faunal design above the base. The lamp is set into a carved wood base. Mechanism of the lightbulb, plug, etc. contained in interior of cylinder. Light illuminates from inside. Lamp has a carved finial of an elephant on top.
Historical NoteThis lamp was purchased by Jacqueline Kennedy during her state visit to India in March of 1962 in an outdoor market.
Additional DetailsCustodial History NoteItem was purchased by First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy in India in 1962 and held by the General Service Administration until it was donated to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum by the Estate of President John F. Kennedy in 1965.
