Physical DescriptionGold plated medallion awarded to Ernest Hemingway for "distinction in the art of the novel". Recto has wreath in center and "American Academy of Arts and Letter Award of Merit" along outer rim. Verso has a naked male greek figure carrying a lute with sun setting in background. "Opportunity Inspiration Achievement" written along outer rim.
Historical NoteThis American Academy of Arts and Letters Award of Merit was awarded to Ernest Hemingway for his contributions as a novelist on June 10, 1954 in New York. Hemingway was not present to receive the award.
