Historical NoteThis section from a pennant flag hung in President John F. Kennedy's Oval Office of the White House. An inscription on the back of the original frame read: "The flag of John Barry father of the American Navy, commanded the Lexington, Eff… Rawley and alliance on which he carried Lafayette to France in 1781. This flag flew on the Raleigh where Barry was captured and escaped taking the flag with him. Barry was borne in County Wexford Ireland and died and was buried in the Catholic …. In Philadelphia. The flag was given by him to a Catholic priest in Philadelphia and became the property of James Shaw(?) where the decendents of the priest sold his affects from the James ...(?) collections." However, it is unlikely that the fragment owned by JFK came from the USS Raleigh.
