Physical DescriptionFramed pen and ink drawing of Christmas 1961 greeting for John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline B. Kennedy. Drawing of Caroline Kennedy holding up a stocking sitting in front of a window. Outside in the sky is Santa Claus flying in his sleigh with 3 army helicopters pulling the sleigh instead of reindeer.
Historical NoteThis pen and ink illustration of Caroline Kennedy preparing to hang her Christmas stocking while Santa's helicopter-drawn sleigh approaches in the window was sent to President and Mrs. Kennedy by members of Marine Helicopter One, or HMX-1. Established in 1947 as an experimental unit, HMX-1 tested and evaluated rotary wing military helicopters. It also became the helicopter transport for U.S. presidents in the post-war years.
The artist, Lt. Col. A. Michael Leahy, earned a BFA in graphic art before becoming a helicopter pilot and combat artist. As a member of HMX-1 he flew presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy and Nixon.
