Physical DescriptionTwo white silk painted lanterns that mount on top of 2 black lacquered wooden stands with metal decorative embellishments on stems. Placed on table MO 63.4843.16.1. Part of hina doll altar set used during Hina Matsuri (Girls' Day).
Historical NoteMiniature furniture and other household accessories are incorporated into the hina doll altars set up in Japanese households during the Hina-Matsuri, or Girls' Day, festivities on March 3 each year. The floor lamps are traditonally placed at each end of the top tier of the altar.
Additional DetailsCustodial History NoteItem was a gift from a member of the general public to the President and Mrs. Kennedy received by the Executive Office of the President betwen 1961-1963 and held by the General Service Administration until it was donated to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum by the Estate of President John F. Kennedy in 1965.
