Historical NoteThis photograph was presented to President Kennedy by Jorge Alessandri, president of Chile (1958-1964), during his State Visit to the White House on December 11, 1962.

President Kennedy and President Jorge Alessandri's relationship was somewhat distanced and shaped by U.S. efforts to influence Latin America which Kennedy saw as a potential model for democratic, non-communist development. JFK's administration was concerned about the growing leftist movements in Latin America, particularly after the Cuban Revolution in 1959. His Alliance for Progress program aimed at promoting economic development and social reforms in Latin America to counter communist influence. While Alessandri welcomed U.S. aid, his conservative economic policies and reluctance to push strong social reforms in Chile made him a lukewarm participant in
President Kennedy's program.
