Historical NoteThe TIROS progam (Television Infrared Observation Satellite) was NASA's first experiment in using satellites to monior and study Earth. TIROS proved extremely successful in providing the first accurate weather forecasts based on data gathered from space. TIROS began continuous coverage of the Earth's weather in 1962 and was used by meteorologists world wide.
The TIROS VII was a weather Satellite also used to gather data on electron density and temperature in space. The launch date was June 19, 1963, it was deactivated on June 3, 1968.
