Physical DescriptionFigure of a monkey carved from ebony wood. The monkey is in a seated position with its knees pulled toward his body and his hands covering his eyes. The surface of the wood is textured to resemble fur. The tail extends up the spinal cord.
Historical NoteThis monkey carving is one of a set of two pieces given to President Kennedy by Samuel Ladoke Akintola, premier of the Western Region of Nigeria (1959-1962) in April 1962. The country had achieved independence from Great Britain two years earlier.
Additional DetailsCustodial History NoteItem was a gift from a foreign official to the President and First Lady received through the Executive office during the Kennedy Administration and transferred to the General Service Administration where it was held until donated to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum by the Estate of President John F. Kennedy in 1965.
