Historical NoteJohn F. Kennedy, then a Democratic congressman, challenged incumbent Republican Senator Henry Cabot Lodge Jr., for the Massachusetts Senate seat in 1952.
The race drew national attention and was seen by some as a contest between Boston's traditional Brahmin establishment and the rising Irish Catholic community. Kennedy narrowly defeated Lodge, paving the way for his political career.
