Physical DescriptionRectangular medallion honoring Jose Gervasio Artigas, the first leader of the Uruguayan independence movement. This bronze medallion is carved in low relief with a political meeting of men standing and sitting in chairs in front of a desk. Recto is inscribed: Artigas/ Padre De la Patria/ Libertad Independencia /Democracia-Americanismo.
Historical NoteThis gift was presented to as a gift to President Kennedy by Eduardo Haedo, President of Uruguay (1961-1962), at Punta del Este Conference in August of 1961.
Additional DetailsCustodial History NoteItem was a gift from a foreign official to the President and First Lady received through the Executive office during the Kennedy Administration and transferred to the General Service Administration where it was held until donated to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum by the Estate of President John F. Kennedy in 1965.
