Physical Description14K gold filled The Family of Man Award engraved "in recognition of creative leadership and dedicated service." Obverse has relief of five symbolic figures linking hands with feet together in center, and a Greek inscription around the edge meaning "Family of Man."
Historical NoteThe award was presented by the Protestant Council of the City of New York to John F. Kennedy on November 8, 1963. In his acceptance speech the President explains that robust domestic and foreign aid programs are essential to reducing and eliminating the problems afflicting the international "human family," such as poverty, malnutrition, and political instability.
Additional DetailsCustodial History NoteItem was presented to President Kennedy in New York in 1963 by the Prostestant Council of the City of New York and held by the General Service Administration until it was donated to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum by the Estate of President John F. Kennedy in 1965.
