Physical DescriptionGrand Officer's badge, "Grande Ufficiale Dell 'Ordine Al Merito della Repubblica Italiana' ". The badge is a white enamal cross with four eagles with wings spread between the arms of the cross, suspended from a castellated crown, on a green ribbon with red edges. The Order of Merit is awarded for contributions in the fields of literature, the economy, public service, and social, philanthropic and humanitarian activities. Presented in a green case.
Historical NoteAwarded by the Italian Government to Senator John F. Kennedy August 3, 1957. Senator Edward Kennedy received the same award (see EMK 78.156). Ordine Al Merito della Repubblica Italiana was established by the Italian government in 1951.
Additional DetailsCustodial History NoteItem is from the personal collection of President and Mrs. Kennedy. It was donated to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum by the Estate of President John F. Kennedy in 1965.
