Physical DescriptionAward winning original color design for the 1961 Inaugural stand from which President-elect John F. Kennedy viewed the Inaugural parade on January 20th. The design was created by architect Robert P. Brackett who was the winner of the competition conducted by the Washington-Metropolitan Chapter, American Institute of Architects, in which 23 architects participated. The painting depicts an open, white roofed structure with a large Presidential seal on the ceiling, flanked by two golden eagles and two flag poles. Convertible cars are seen on the road driving past the viewing stand with figures waving. A large crowd is seated under the stand and small figures are seen standing in the background. The lower left hand corner of the mat was later inscribed to the architect and signed by President Kennedy in ink. Inscription reads: For Robert Paul Brackett, A beautiful design - but where is the snow? Congratulations and every good wish John F. Kennedy.
Historical NoteThe reviewing stand depicted in the image is the model from which the actual structure was constructed, based on photographs of the 1961 inauguration.
