Physical DescriptionTwo diamond shaped forms comprised of pink, white, and black stacked pieces made to imitate appearance of hishi-mochi rice cakes; fit into inset on top of diamond tables MO 63.4843.16.6-7. Part of hina doll altar set used during Hina Matsuri (Girls' Day).
Historical NoteMiniature furniture and other household accessories are incorporated into the hina doll altars set up in Japanese households during the Hina-Matsuri, or Girls' Day, festivities on March 3 each year. These diamond shaped pieces represent hishi-mochi, a special type of rice cake identified with Hina Matsuri celebrations. They are traditionally placed on tables positioned between the minister dolls on the fourth tier of the altar.
