Physical Description18 black lacquer and gilt wood miniature bowls with lids in varying sizes, for placement on tables MO 63.4843.16.4-5. Part of hina doll set used on Hina Matsuri (Girls' Day).
Historical NoteMiniature furniture and other household accessories are incorporated into the hina doll altars set up in Japanese households during the Hina-Matsuri, or Girls' Day, festivities on March 3 each year. In a five tier altar set like this one, the pair of miniature tables set with tiny vessels are placed on either side of the diamond-shaped hishi-mochi tables on the fourth tier, with the minister dolls at each end.
