Historical NoteIn the two weeks after President Kennedy’s assassination the National Woven Label Co. produced an unknown number of memorial bookmarks featuring JFK’s likeness and an excerpt from the eulogy given by United States Senate Majority Leader Michael Mansfield in the rotunda of the US Capitol when the President lay in state. The bookmarks were sent to the company’s clients. At least three other manufacturers--Capitol Label Co. of New York, American Silk Label Mfg. Co. of Unionville, NY, and Warner Mill in Patterson, NJ—created similar or identical Kennedy bookmarks.
Additional DetailsCustodial History NoteItem was donated to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in 2022 by Jerry Rombach, the grandson of the original owner. This bookmark was sent to the Manufacturer's clients, including Walter Zenthoefer, owner of Zenthoefer’s Furs in St. Louis, Missouri and the grandfather of the donor. Mr. Zenthoefer preserved the bookmark on its original presentation backing, along with the letter from the company and envelope.
