Physical DescriptionAward presented to John F. Kennedy for distinguished service. Medallion shows image of Emmy trophy surrounded by "National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for Distinguished Service" on obverse. Engraved on Reverse: "Presented as a token of admiration and esteem to President John Fitzgerald Kennedy for restoring to the American people the spirit of the Lincoln - Douglas debates and in the vastly wider area of communication afforded by television and at a time when the need for national unity and understanding was never more vital / Sept. 26, Oct. 7 and Oct. 13, 1960”.
Historical NoteThis Emmy Award medallion was presented to President Kennedy as a "Token of admiration and esteem" for his participation in the first-ever live televised presidential debates during the 1960 election.
Additional DetailsCustodial History NoteItem was a gift from a member of the general public to the President and Mrs. Kennedy received by the Executive Office of the President betwen 1961-1963 and held by the General Service Administration until it was donated to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum by the Estate of President John F. Kennedy in 1965.
