Historical NoteFirst Lady Jacqeline Kennedy wore this dress on March 19, 1962 during a two-day holiday in Jaipur, India with her sister Lee Radziwell. The two were guests of the Maharaja and Maharani of Jaipur. While there, Mrs. Kennedy met with members of the Peace Corps and later was joined by her sister for an elephant ride on the grounds of the Amber Palace.
Instead of slacks, which would not have not met the high degree of formality Mrs. Kennedy required of her state clothing, the First Lady wore this Gastave Tassell dress and pumps for the ride. With Mrs. Kennedy's wardrobe in mind, Indian officials has constructed an elaborately decorated platform so that she and her sister could mount Bibia the elephant with an appropriate degree of dignity.
