Physical DescriptionMiniature bronze sculpture of a "mountain man" holding a rifle. Traditionally given to people of importance by the Bill Williams Mountain Men of Williams, AZ.
Historical NoteThe Mountain Man miniature is traditionally given to people of importance by Bill Williams Mountain Men of Williams, Arizona. The organization was a marching unit in the 1961 Inaugural, and tried to get an appointment with President Kennedy to present the sculpture to him. The organization gave the object to the Secretary of the Interior for President Kennedy. The Mountain Men were trappers (for the most part) who learned to live with the native Americans rather than fight with them, preceding the wave of settlement of the Rocky Mountain West in the mid-19th Century. The Williams Mountain Men is a civic group dedicated to preserving the tradition of the original Mountain Men, one of whom was named Bill Williams.
