Physical DescriptionWhite china plate hand painted with a design of a Native American woman wearing a white beaded traditional dress with fringe and turquoise jewelry. She is holding a feather and wears a head band with a single feather. The initials B.J.W. and 1963 are inscribed below right foot.

Historical NoteOn March 5, 1963 President Kennedy made remarks to respresentatives of the National Congress of American Indians at the White House. In his speech the president discussed his plans to improve educational and employment opportunities for Native Americans and indigenous peoples. In his remarks, the president thanks the representatives for this set of six handpainted plates presented by one of the members of the National Congress of American Indians.
Additional DetailsCustodial History NoteThis plate was presented as a gift to President Kennedy in 1963 by a member of the National Congress of American Indians. it was held by the Exedcutive Office of the President and the General Service Administration until it was donated to the government in 1965 by the Estate of President John F. Kennedy.
